The U.S. Mint reported striking 1,000 Proof Silver Dollars in 1870, though it is doubtful if they actually sold that amount.  However, the number of Proof 1870 Silver Dollars certified by PCGS is consistent with other contemporary dates and suggests that the total mintage is close to the reported figure.  This is a great date for type purposes because Proof 1870 Silver Dollars generally come nice and have great eye appeal.  A number of high-quality, non-Cameo Proofs are available to collectors as well as some lovely Cameo and Deep Cameo Proofs. Only a few dates in the series can claim PR67 examples as their own, and 1870 is one of them.

Cameo Proofs represent approximately 1/6th of the total population and Deep Cameos appear on fewer than ten percent of all examples.
