The 1869-S Dime is slightly scarcer than many of the other dates in the Legend Obverse type, but it is still readily available in most grades. Mint State examples tend to be low-end, and very few examples are known in MS65 or better. A single PCGS MS67 example exists which is one of the finest Dimes of the era. This date often comes weakly struck and the mintmark lacks definition. Many examples appear to have been struck from old, worn out dies.
According to Dime expert, Gerry Fortin, the entire mintage of this date is comprised of the output from only two die pairs. Either this is an amazing output per die or there are other die pairs waiting to be discovered.
