Crossed from an NGC MS65 CAC. This coin is also a PCGS CAC. It is muted but has great surface preservation, that of a higher coin, but the grime on it holds it back.

Many of the Half Dollar dates from the 1860's have small mintages relative to their branch mint counterparts and the 1868 is no exception. It shows a mintage of 417,600 pieces compared to 1,160,000 for the San Francisco Mint. As a result, the 1868 Half Dollar is much scarcer than might be expected, the price is much higher than that of a normal "type" coin, and it is surprisingly difficult to locate in Mint State (where the typoicla quality is a mid-range MS63. Gems are very rare, especially above MS65. Somewhere "out there" is a PCGS MS67 example that has never appeared at auction. As the sole Top Pop, it would easily set a new record price for this date.
