Business strike 1866 quarter eagles are not quite as rare as those of 1864 or 1865. However, the 1866 is more rare in proof despite comparable mintage. Most business strikes are very low grade and the 1866 is tied for having the twelfth lowest average grade of any quarter eagle in our 226 auction catalog survey. Like the 1864, and 1865, the 1866 is very underrated in all grades. It has appeared at auction less often than either of the 1796's, the 1797, the 1808, or the 1875 to name just a few. I have not seen a strictly uncirculated 1866 and only one piece that even graded full AU.PCGS #
