The 1858 is the first in a long run of very rare low mintage Philadelphia Mint Half Eagles. During the 20 year period from 1858 to 1877, only the 1861 and 1873 had mintages in exceess of 20,000 pieces. The 1858 is not often seen in any condition but when one is available, VF or EF is the likely grade. Strictly uncirculated specimens are known, including several gems, but they are very rare.
