As a date, the 1857 is one of the more common gold dollars. However, really choice uncirculated specimens are surprisingly difficult to obtain. As one can see from the data, in the 192 auction catalogues tallied only 25 uncirculated pieces were offered. Contrast this for example to the 1877 where 42 uncirculated pieces were offered, or the 1880 where 83 uncs. were offered in the 192 sales. Yet, inexplecably, the 1857 invariably sells at a common date price.PCGS #
