The 1857 Quarter Dollar has the third largest mintage of the entire Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar type (only the 1853 With Arrows & Rays and the 1854 have larger mintages). That makes the 1857 a perfect coin for type purposes because it is readily available in all grades. Even in Mint State, over 200 examples have been certified by PCGS alone. MS64 is the most plentiful grade, but even Gems can be found with relative ease. In MS67, the population drops off markedly and, in MS68, only a single PCGS-graded example is available. Recently (11/2013), an NGC MS68 example from the Eric Newman collection set a new record price of $35,250 for the date.
