Proof 1854 Silver Dollars are very rare.  Estimates of the number of known examples ranges from 25 to 40, though this number is becoming more solid after 28+ years of certification.  PCGS reports 20 examples, and NGC shows 17 (as of October 2014).  More than 25 examples are known, and there may actually be as many as 50 known when no-grades are included.  Photo-tracking of known examples will help to determine a more accurate number of survivors.

In the meantime, collectors can find examples in the PR61 to PR64 range with out too much trouble, but the coins are pricey in any grade.  The finest example certified by PCGS is a single PR65CAM.  DCAM examples are extremely rare; NGC reports a single PR64UCAM and no others.
