Owner's Comments

This gold half eagle, though minted in Philadelphia, bears the auspicious date of 1848, when gold was first discovered in California, sparking the gold rush.

Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88)

Despite the comparatively high mintage for the period, the 1848 is a rare coin, as rare as many of the mintmarked coins of the 1840's with much lower mintages. When available, the typical example is VF or at best EF.
