Proof 1848 Dimes are incredibly rare coins, with only eight examples known to exist. The PCGS Auction Prices records are misleading because there are so many reappearances of the same coins. In fact, as of August 23,2017, the 23 auction listings for this date represent only five different examples (better to use the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census listings above). Additional examples reside in the American Numismatic Society and Smithsonian Collections, but they are off the market for the foreseeable future.
All of the known Proof 1848 Dimes are in excellent condition, ranging from PCGS MS64 to NGC MS66, save for a PR55 example discovered in 2018. All are toned in varying degrees of color, some being darker than others, but all with great eye appeal. The price record of $39,100 belonged to the NGC PR66 from the Turtle Rock Collection (sold in 2008 by Superior Galleries), but that coin is now in a PCGS PR65 holder.
