David Akers (1975/88)
This date is rare in all grades, more so than the 1842-O or 1843-O and comparable overall to the 1840,1841 and both varieties of 1842. High grade specimens are extremely rare and the overwhelming majority of known examples are only VF. At the AU level, this date is extremely rare and I have seen only one strictly uncirculated example; an unc has never appeared for sale at auction, at least not in the 369 catalogues included in my survey. (PCGS editor's note: David Akers' $10 book was published in 1980. Since that time...as of March, 2011...only one PCGS uncirculated 1843 has appeared at auction. A MS61 example was sold in 2003.)PCGS #
