1828 25C XF40 Certification #25063805, PCGS #5342

The 1828 is the last of the Large Size Quarter Dollars.  The entire mintage of this year consists of so-called Normal 1828's and the scarcer 25/50 variety.  The Normal 1828's are represented by three different die varieties: Browning 1, 2, and 4.  Fortunately, Browning 1 is a common variety, making it easy for collectors to find a Normal 1828 in a wide range of grades.  Affordable in lower grades, the Normal 1828 becaomes rare and relatively expensive in Mint State.  The finest examples are MS64 and above, with the majority grading out at MS65.  The "finest example" title boils down to a fight between an NGC MS67 (which holds the price record of $108,687.50) and a PCGS MS66+ that was once called a Proof.

Here's an interesting anecdote: the 1828 Browning 1 shares a reverse with the extremely rare, Original 1827 Quarter!
