The comments for the 1827 Half Eagle and the 1827 BD-1 Half Eagle are the same because only the one die variety is known for this year.  Thus, the demand for the date and the variety is equal; in fact, very few people collect early U.S. gold coins by variety, but plenty of people collect by date or type.

Dannreuther (and Bass by inference) estimate only 35-45 survivors for this date, which seems plausible based on certification  and auction prices realized data.  Since 1971, twenty Mint State 1827 Eagles have appeared at auction (with some duplication, of course), which means collectors have ample opportunities to obtain high grade examples.  The best example of this variety and date, and the one with the price record of $322,000, is a single PCGS MS66 that sold most recently in 2008.
