Expert Comments

All known 1824 Capped Bust Quarters were struck from a single die pair, which mated an unused 1822 obverse over-dated for 1824 with the reverse used previously to strike the similarly over-dated quarters of 1823. The mintages of many early federal coins are no more than educated guesses. However, in “Early United States Quarters 1796-1838”, Steve Tompkins argues that the entire mintage of 1824 quarters, 16,000 coins, was delivered in Warrant #935 on December 31, 1823, providing a hard mintage number for this scarcer date. Today, 1824 is one of the key dates among Capped Bust Quarters, with only a few remaining in full Mint State, a few more in just-miss AU-58, then an ample group in AU50 to AU55. The likely finest known is Eliasberg:1387, generally ranked as MS65, followed by the Pogue PCGS MS64.

All 1824 Quarter Dollars are overdates.  Unfortunately, the overdate is barely visible -- even on high-grade coins -- because the 2 is so faintly impressed beneath the 4 of the date.  The 1824 Quarter is considered a scarce coin in all grades, and it is truly rare in Mint State.  The finest example is the Eliasberg MS65, followed by a PCGS MS64 from thge D. Brent Pogue Collection, then a pair of MS62's.  Overall, this date is fairly well struck, though no examples show all stars fully struck and most show weakness on the scroll and motto on the reverse.  At least one Proof example is known of this date.
