1814 1C Plain 4, BN AG3BN Certification #33519206, PCGS #1576
Expert Comments
Ron Guth
Two major varieties comprise 1814 Large Cents: Plain 4 and Crosslet 4 (referring to the absence or presence of a crossbar on the end of the horizontal bar of the 4). Though both varieties are plentiful, the Plain 4 is definitely the less common of the two. No Red-Brown or Red examples are known of either variety.
The 1814 Plain 4 Large Cent is scarce in Mint State and is most likely to be found in MS-63. Gems are very rare and the finest example certified by PCGS (as of October 2011) is a single MS-66 Brown.
