About This Set: Emperor Meiji (called Emperor Mutsuhito during his life) came to power as the first monarch of the restored monarchy in Japan in 1868. This so named "Meiji Restoration" ended 266 years of rule by the Tokagawa Shogunate. Many reforms took place during this period, including disbanding the Samurai, conversion of the war lords' lands to government administration, and the introduction of struck coinage, which is the subject of this Signature set.
