U.S. Quarters Complete Set with Major Varieties, Proof (1820-present)

A set of Proof Quarters from 1820 to date is neither for the impatient nor those obsessed with completeness. It also is not for the faint of wallet. While we could certainly make a long list of impossibly rare dates, suffice it to say that the combined PCGS population in all Proof grades for the 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841 and 1842 quarters is fewer than ten pieces. And the 1841 alone accounts for three, meaning there are no 1839 Proofs yet certified by PCGS. Breen estimates only one proof known for 1838 and only one for 1839. In fact, for virtually all Proof dates prior to 1856, the PCGS population remains in the single digits. And this after nearly 35 years of examining coins. Most of the remaining dates after 1856 are obtainable for a price, and for the vast majority who undertake this set, this will have to suffice.
