About This Set: The American Buffalo .9999 24-karat gold bullion coin started in 2006 based on an adaptation of James Earle Fraser's iconic Indian Head Buffalo design, first used on circulating five-cent pieces of 1913 to 1938. I enjoy the buffalo design and believe that this design is representative of the great west when the buffalo freely roamed America. While both the buffalo and the eagle contain one full ounce of gold, the buffalo is 24-karat and has a yellower look to the coin and a bit more shine. This really makes the coin stand out nicely. (The eagle is one full ounce of gold, but due to being 22-karat the eagle is actually greater than 1 ounce at 1.0909 ounces to compensate for extra silver and copper for strength). Both the eagle and buffalo contain .9999 1 ounce of pure gold, but the eagle has a more coppery look due to the added metal. I appreciate the yellow of the buffalo, but recognize the softness and easy to damage buffalo coin as it is. The entire buffalo coin set (mint state and proof) is produced at the West Point US Mint that specializes in smaller higher quality production sets for collectors. I think the buffalo is a fantastic coin and a complement to the eagle.
